With regards to the following glossary, please note that:

"Insured" refers to the policyholder that is the employer-company in the case of Group Employee Insurance. It is also sometimes known as the "Assured"
|

"Insurer" refers to the insurance company. |
| |
|
"Insured Person" refers to the Insured Member and Insured Dependant who are participating in the insurance plan under the Policy. |
|
|
| Accident or Accidental |
|
A sudden, unforeseen and unexpected event caused by violent, external and visible means.
|
| Accidental Miscarriage |
|
The loss of a foetus resulting from bodily injury sustained by a pregnant female caused solely and directly by Accident. |
| Actively At Work |
|
Used to describe a person reporting for work at the place assigned by the Insured and performing all regular duties of Insured Person's employment with the Insured or being on entitled annual leave for reasons other than on medical grounds. |
| Active Service |
|
A situation where an employee is:
i) employed by the Insured on a full-time permanent basis,
ii) actively working on a day which is one of the Insured's schedule work days, and
iii) performing in the customary manner all the regular duties of his employment with the Insured on a full-time basis that day, either at one of the Insured's business establishment, or at location which the Insured's business requires him to be present.
The employee will be considered in Active Service on a day which is not one of the Insured's schedule workdays only if he was performing in the customary manner all the regular duties of his employment on the preceding scheduled workday. |
| Annual Salary |
|
Basic Salary in a calendar year. If an Insured Person is remunerated by way of commissions only, the Annual Salary of the Insured is generally deemed to be 80% of the commission paid by the Insured to such Insured Person in the previous calendar year. |
| Any one disability |
|
All disabilities including any and all complications arising from the same cause except that after a specified number of days (usually 30 days) following the latest discharge from hospital, any subsequent disability, meaning a recurrent or relapse from the same cause shall be considered a new disability. |
| Basic Salary |
|
The salary only and does not include any special allowance, overtime pay, bonuses, commissions (unless the Insured Person is remunerated by way of commission only), director's fees and any other emoluments. |
| Co-insurance |
|
The percentage of Eligible Expenses payable under the Policy Benefit Schedule that has to be borne by the Insured Person. |
| Co-payment |
|
The amount of Eligible Expenses payable under the Policy Benefit Schedule that has to be borne by the Insured Person. |
| Deductible Amount |
|
A sum from the first dollar up to a certain agreed amount which is not payable and has to be borne by the Insured Member in a claim. |
| Deferred Period |
|
The period commencing on the first day of
Disability in respect of which no benefit shall be paid. |
| Dependant |
|
A spouse of the Insured Person who is below the age of 65 and who is not divorced or legally separated from the Insured Person; an unmarried and unemployed child of the Insured Person who is between the age of 15 days and 19 years or between the age of 15 days and 25 years in the case of a child who is a full-time student in an institution of higher learning, and whose eligibility to participate in this insurance plan under the Policy has been agreed in writing between Insured and the Insurer. |
| Disability |
|
In the case of Disability Income Insurance, the Insured Person suffers from a state of infirmity of mind or body which has been caused by injury or sickness and as a result of which the Insured Person shall be totally incapacitated from performing the occupation in which he was engaged by the Insured immediately before becoming incapacitated. |
| Effective Date |
|
The date from which the insurance coverage under the Policy, in respect of any Insured Person, becomes effective. |
| Eligible Dependants
|
|

| Eligible Expenses |
|
Expenses which are covered according to the policy provisions, conditions and limitations contained in, subject to the Maximum Limits stated, if any. |
| Eligible Members |
|
Members generally below age 60 at the commencement of insurance, who, having completed the required Waiting Period (if any) and are not otherwise disqualified by any reason, are entitled to participate in the insurance plan under the Policy. |
| Eligible Person |
|

| Entry Date |
|
The date an Eligible Member becomes an Insured Member under the Policy. |
| Extended Death and
Total and Permanent Disability |
|
Benefits of a life insured whose service has been terminated by the Insured on medical grounds that has been extended for a period of 12 months subject to certain provisions in the policy. |
| Free Cover Limit |
|
The maximum sum insured up to an agreed age which the Insurer is able to accept without evidence of insurability. |
| Hospital |
|
Any lawfully operating institution, which has 24 hours a day nursing services by registered graduate nurses, one or more physicians available at all times and organised facilities for diagnosis and major surgery and shall not primarily be a clinic, a place for alcoholics or drug addicts, a nursing, rest or convalescent home or home for the aged or similar establishment. |
| Hospital Confinement
|
|
Confinement in a hospital:
(i) for at least six to eight consecutive hours without treatment; or
(ii) for any duration for the purpose of surgery and any preparation(s) and procedure(s) in connection with it. |
| Illness |
|
A physical condition marked by a pathological deviation from normal healthy state. |
| Injury |
|
Bodily injury sustained accidentally by external means. |
| Insured Dependant |
|
A Dependant who is included in the policy. |
| Insurance Period |
|
The period for which the Insured Person is covered by insurance under the Policym |
| Loss of use |
|
Loss in terms of physical incapacity or disability and not in terms of professional or occupational incapacity or disability of the Insured Member. |
| No-Evidence Limit |
|

| Non-Medical Evidence

| Partial Disability |
|
A condition whereby, as a result of the sickness or injury which causes Total Disability, the Insured Member is:
(i) able to perform one or more, but not all of the material and substantial duties of his own occupation on a full-time basis; or
(ii) able to perform all of the material and substantial duties of his own occupation on a part-time basis. |
| Permanent |
|
A condition lasting 12 calendar months and at the expiry of that period being beyond hope of improvement. |
| Per disability |
|

| Physician |
|
A person qualified by degree in western medicine and legally authorised in the geographical area of his practice to render medical or surgical services who is other than the Insured Member or a member of his immediate family. |
| Policy |
|
The agreement, any Supplementary Contracts or endorsements, any amendments signed by the Insured, the application attached of the Insured, and the individual enrolment forms, if any, of the Insured Members, which together constitute the entire contract between the parties. |
| Policy Anniversary |
|
The anniversary of the Policy Effective Date or the date otherwise specified in the Policy Schedule. |
| Policy Effective Date |
|
he date from which the insurance coverage under the Policy becomes effective. |

| Policy Period |
|
A period of one year or such other periods agreed in writing between the Insured and the Insurer, commencing from the Policy Commencement Date for the first Policy Period and from the respective Renewal Dates for subsequent Policy Periods. |

A period of 12 consecutive months beginning with the Policy Effective Date and subsequent Policy Anniversaries. |
| Pre-existing conditions
|
|
Conditions which have existed at any time prior to the commencement of insurance coverage in respect of the Insured Person under this Policy, whether known or unknown to the Insurer and/or Insured Person in so far as the cause or pathology of the conditions have already existed, unless the Insured Person has already been insured continuously for 12 months under this Policy or under any Group Hospital & Surgical Insurance Policy issued in Singapore immediately prior to the commencement of his insurance coverage under the Policy. |

|

| Schedule of Surgical
Operation |
|
A schedule showing the different percentages (which vary according to the severity of the surgical operation) applied by the insurance companies on the Surgical fee benefit limit stated in the policy benefit schedule to arrive at the maximum amount payable under this benefit.

Restructured Hospital |
|
The privatised Singapore government Hospital which includes the following Hospitals, presently known by the names of:
(i) Singapore General Hospital
(ii) Changi General Hospital
(iii) KK Women's & Children's Hospital
(iv) Tan Tock Seng Hospital
(v) Alexandra Hospital |
| Single-bed Ward |
|
The class of hospital ward which is categorised as 'single bedded' by the Hospital in which the Insured Person is in Hospital Confinement and shall not include luxury suites or other special rooms that are available at the Hospital in addition to the standard category of 'single-bed' wards. |
| Sum Assured |
|
The amount of assurance as specified in the policy. |
| Surgical Schedule |
|

| Terminal Illness |
|
An illness which is certified by the insurer's appointed medical consultants as highly likely to lead to death within 12 months. |
| Total and Permanent
Disability |
|
The complete inability of an Insured Member to engage in any gainful occupation or employment for compensation, profit or gain for the remainder of his lifetime as a result of accidental bodily injury, sickness or disease; the total and irrecoverable loss of sight of both eyes, or the loss by severance of two or more limbs at or above wrists or ankles, or the total and irrecoverable loss of sight of one eye and loss by severance of one limb at or above wrist or ankle. |
